Typically this is all you see of a boto, or 'pink' river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis) in the River Amazon and its tributaries. Despite its common name, it is not always pink, but can be identified by its long snout, and the fact that it has no dorsal fin, just a low hump on its back (shown here). This one was photographed in Lake Maica, near Santarem in Brazil.

A tucuxi, or grey river dolphin (Sotalia fluviatilis) in the Rio Negro, a major tributary of the River Amazon near Manaus, in Brazil. The distinctly triangular dorsal fin distinguishes this from the boto, or 'pink' river dolphin, which has only a small hump on its back. This one is lying on its side, showing its flipper; note it is rather pinkish in colour too!
